The Life of Otto Carius
Biography
Otto Carius was an officer in the Wehrmacht and one of the most successful tank commanders of World War II. After the war, he was a pharmacist all his life. He became known as the author of his book Tiger im Schlamm (Tiger in the Mud), published in 1960, which describes his memories of wartime service from 1940 to 1945 and is one of the more successful titles in war memoir literature.

The 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion (German: “schwere Panzerabteilung 502”) was a German heavy tank battalion during World War II. The battalion was the first unit to receive and field the Tiger I. It fought on the Eastern front. It was one of the most successful German heavy tank battalions, claiming the destruction of 1,400 tanks and 2,000 guns. Otto Carius, one of the best German tank aces, was a member.

“Tigers in the Mud” (german: “Tiger im Schlamm”) are the war memoirs of Otto Carius, the chief of the 2nd Company of the s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 512. The focus of the account is on the operations from 24.02. to 22.03. 1944, the operation around Narwa and Dünaburg, retold with the help of the original combat report of Division and Corps, which Carius was able to save beyond the war.
